A smiling Dexter Gordon is depicted ca. 1948 wearing his porkpie hat and holding his tenor saxophone. Frederick J. Brown was a painter of musicians who was influenced by the German Expressionists and Abstract Expressionists like Willem de Kooning who was a mentor. His works can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri.
