Rev. War West Point Return 1779

“Return of the 1st Massachusetts Battalion of Foot Commanded by Colonel John Bailey.”

An accounting of the soldiers and officers in Colonel Bailey’s Regiment. Four privates are noted as being “In his Excellency’s Guard” – no doubt a reference to General George Washington’s guard. One entry on verso lists “Lieut. Eldred… Prisoner of War.” Verso is dated April 16, 1779 at West Point, NY. West Point is located on the Highlands overlooking the Hudson River and would later become the location of the famous military academy. Paper watermarked with “GR” under crown. Single sheet. Folio. Writing on both sides of document.
