[Fur Trade] Trapper Julius DeMun Appeals

to the U.S. Government For Help After Being Made a Captive by the Spanish and for Being Held in the “Dungeons” of Santa Fe in 1817

Here is a scarce and fascinating Congressional document relative to the investigation of circumstances that led to the capture and imprisonment of American trappers by the Spanish authorities at Santa Fe, New Mexico. Includes correspondence between U.S. and Spanish diplomats as well as depostions by witnesses such as famed explorer and trader Toussaint Charbonneau. Valuable for the detailed letter by De Mun to Governor William Clark recounting the circumstances surrounding Demun’s and Choteau’s capture by the Spaniards as well as their imprisonment and trial by Governor Pedro Allande at Santa Fe.
